Flaking Paint on Interior Doors
- Flat Door with Latex Paint Flaking off of Enamel Paint
- Paint Flaking Off Oil-Base Paint with Thumb
- Old Door with Flaking Paint vs New Door and New Paint
Interior Door Concepts encounters old flat doors like the ones pictured above all the time. In the “good old days”, builders and painters used oil based, or alkyd enamel paints on the doors and trim.
Unfortunately, when latex paint is applied over oil base or alkyd enamel paint without proper surface preparation, the result is what you see above. The old flat door had a coat of latex paint applied over the original enamel paint. The latex paint never adheres well to the enamel paint, resulting in a coating that is very easy to damage. As you can see in the middle photo, a thumb is all it takes to scratch the latex paint off the door.
There is not much you can do with a door that looks like this. The latex paint will never stick to the old enamel paint, and more coats of paint will only exacerbate the problem. The best approach is to replace the old door with a stylish new interior door.
When we install new doors, we use Sherwin Williams Kem Aqua lacquer to give the doors a smooth hard finish that is durable and beautiful. Our standard colors are SW Extra White, SW Dover White, SW Alabaster, SW Pure White, and SW Snowbound. Interior Door Concepts selected these Sherwin-Williams colors because these are the colors that SW sells most often. Of course, if you have a specific color you wish us to use, we will be happy to select that color for a small additional charge.
